I call these pots the "blue animal" series, although it's not actually the animals that are blue. The blue background color comes from a slip,
a layer of colored clay that is brushed on while the pot is still wet and soft. Patterns are carved through it to the clay underneath. A clear glaze covers the entire pot. This series is good on serving bowls, platters, small trays, mugs and I sometimes use it on bird feeders. Because of the deep texture, I do not recommend heavily curved slip designs for dinner plates.
